Beware:  the Media Do Err!
We all make mistakes.  Believe us, we are well aware that we are not perfect.

But lately it has been getting worse in the media where facts and Truth seem far from reality.  This is especially true in what once were considered giants of information.

So we couldn't let this one go by.

Recently, the
Times of London insulted our Queen and Mother by displaying a fashion model on its front SUNDAY cover in a mock imitation and blasphemous takeoff of Mary's Immaculate Heart.

This week, it must be payback time because they have a glaring error in their on-line edition.
In an article on Iraq, claiming that an attack would devastate historic sites there, this incredible claim was made in this amazing sentence:

"
This, along with the oldest Christian monastery, situated in Mosul and dating from the 4th century BC, was under threat, he was told."

Can anyone please inform us as to what Christian monastery they are speaking of that has existed from the 4th Century B.C. -- Before Christ?

Not only that, while it would appear we are making fun of a simple slip of the brain, bad writing, and bad editing, it is a little more serious than that.

In the first place, the oldest such monastery is not in Iraq -- it is in Egypt on Mt. Sinai. It is St. Catherine's Monastery run by the Greek Orthodox Church.

It is a place John Paul II visited during his Jubilee pilgrimage in 2000.

In the second place, it is also interesting to contemplate that the greatest threat to historical Christian sites comes not from any attacks or invasion forces, but from local moslem populations who loot, burn and usually just all-around destroy the sanctuaries of the "infidel."  The wanton islamic destruction of the Byzantine Cathedral Hagia Sophia in 1453 comes to mind.

But in this sympathetic article on Iraq's historic sites -- sites which should absolutely be protected -- the
Times has overstepped its historical bounds.  Perhaps it has had to downsize like most major corporations and it no longer has a staff of editors.

What can we expect from a newspaper that demeans the Mother of God while lauding scientists who tell us
we are descended from the aardvark?
